What Local Law 1 Requires

Local Law 1 of 2004 mandates annual visual inspections for rental units in pre-1960 buildings where children under 6 reside. It also requires turnover inspections when tenants move in or out.

  • Annual notice: Send lead hazard notices to all tenants by January 16
  • Annual inspection: Visual inspection of units with children under 6
  • Turnover inspection: Visual inspection before new tenant moves in (pre-1960 buildings)
  • Repair requirement: Fix any peeling paint within mandated timeframes
